Guide to Recommended Maintenance Intervals (Km + Time)

Every vehicle is different, but most maintenance falls into predictable intervals. Staying on schedule helps prevent breakdowns, improves safety, and saves money by catching small issues early.

This guide gives real-world recommended intervals (in kilometres + time) for the most common maintenance items. Always follow your owner’s manual when available—especially for modern engines, turbo vehicles, hybrids, and CVTs.

Quick Maintenance Schedule at a Glance

Item Typical Interval (Normal Use) If You Drive “Severe” (Calgary winter, short trips, towing, lots of city driving)
Oil & filter 8,000–12,000 km or 6–12 months 5,000–8,000 km or 6 months
Tire pressure check Monthly Monthly (more in winter)
Tire rotation 8,000–10,000 km 6,000–8,000 km
Wheel alignment check Yearly or if symptoms Yearly + after potholes/curbs
Brake inspection Every oil change or 10,000–15,000 km Every oil change
Cabin air filter 20,000–30,000 km or yearly 15,000–25,000 km
Engine air filter 25,000–40,000 km 20,000–30,000 km
Brake fluid Every 2–3 years Every 2 years
Coolant service 5 years / 100,000 km (varies) Sooner if testing shows weak protection
Transmission service 60,000–100,000 km (varies) 50,000–80,000 km
Differential / transfer case 60,000–100,000 km 50,000–80,000 km
Spark plugs 100,000–160,000 km (varies) Follow OEM; check sooner if misfire/rough running
Serpentine belt Inspect yearly; replace 100,000–160,000 km Inspect more often
Battery test Yearly (before winter) Yearly + anytime starting is slow
Wiper blades 6–12 months/ 6–12 months

Severe driving includes: lots of short trips, extreme cold, heavy stop-and-go, hills, towing/hauling, dusty roads, or long idling.

Recommended Intervals by System

Oil Changes

Oil protects your engine from heat and wear. Short trips and cold starts contaminate oil faster.

  • Normal: 8,000–12,000 km or 6–12 months
  • Severe: 5,000–8,000 km or 6 months

Tires

Tires affect braking, traction, and fuel economy.

  • Pressure: check monthly (and anytime temperatures swing)
  • Rotation: every 8,000–10,000 km
  • Alignment check: yearly, and immediately if you notice pulling, uneven wear, or after a hard pothole hit

Brakes

Don’t wait for noise—brakes can wear silently.

  • Brake inspection: every 10,000–15,000 km (or each oil change)
  • Brake fluid: every 2–3 years (2 years is a solid rule in many cases)

Cooling System (Coolant)

Coolant prevents overheating and freezing and protects against corrosion.

  • Many vehicles: 5 years / 100,000 km (varies widely)
  • Best practice: test freeze/boil protection + inspect hoses yearly, especially before winter

Transmission & Driveline Fluids

Fluid condition and the correct spec matter a lot (especially CVTs).

  • Transmission service: commonly 60,000–100,000 km (sooner for towing/city)
  • Differentials/transfer case: commonly 60,000–100,000 km

If you tow or drive in harsh conditions, lean toward the earlier interval.

Filters

Filters protect your engine and keep cabin air clean.

  • Cabin filter: 20,000–30,000 km or yearly
  • Engine air filter: 25,000–40,000 km (sooner if dusty)

Spark Plugs

Plugs affect fuel economy and misfires.

  • Many modern plugs: 100,000–160,000 km (vehicle-specific)

If you notice rough idle, misfires, or poor fuel economy, check sooner.

Battery & Charging System

Cold weather reduces battery output.

  • Battery test: once a year (best timing: fall)

Replace proactively if it’s testing weak before winter.

Seasonal Checks That Matter in Calgary

Before winter:

  • Battery test + terminal check
  • Tire tread depth + pressures
  • Coolant protection test
  • Wipers + winter washer fluid
  • Brake inspection (pads/rotors + fluid condition)

Before road trips:

  • Oil level/condition
  • Tire pressures + spare
  • Brake inspection
  • Coolant leaks/level
  • Check for uneven tire wear (alignment)
