Car Making Noise After Winter? Common Spring Noises Explained + Fixes

April 4, 2019

When Calgary winter finally lets go, a lot of drivers notice the same thing:  new noises. Clunks over bumps, squeaks when turning, grinding when braking, or a rattle that wasn’t there in December.

That’s not your imagination. Winter potholes, ice buildup, and road salt are hard on  suspension, steering, brakes, exhaust, and wheel bearings. Here’s a clear guide to the most common  spring car noises, what they usually mean, and when to get them checked.

Why Cars Get Noisier in Spring (After Winter)

Winter conditions can cause:

  • Pothole impacts that loosen or damage suspension/steering parts
  • Salt corrosion that affects brakes, exhaust, and hardware
  • Ice/debris buildup that bends shields or packs into wheel wells
  • Temperature swings  that stress rubber bushings and mounts

Spring is often when those issues become noticeable—especially on rough roads.

1) Clunking Noise Over Bumps

What it sounds like: a “thunk” or knock when hitting potholes, speed bumps, or rough roads.

Most common causes

  • Worn  sway bar links or bushings
  • Loose/worn  ball joints
  • Worn  control arm bushings
  • Worn  struts/shocks  or top mounts

Why it matters

A clunk is often a sign of looseness. Left too long, it can affect handling, tire wear, and safety.

2) Squeaking When Turning or Going Over Small Bumps

What it sounds like: a rubber squeak or chirp at low speeds.

Most common causes

  • Dry/worn bushings (control arm/sway bar)
  • Ball joints or tie rod ends beginning to wear
  • Spring insulators or strut mounts

Why it matters

Squeaks are often early warning signs. Catching them early can prevent bigger repairs and uneven tire wear.

3) Grinding, Scraping, or “Metal-on-Metal” When Braking

What it sounds like: harsh grinding when applying brakes.

Most common causes

  • Brake pads worn down to the metal backing
  • Rust buildup after winter + stuck caliper hardware
  • A seized caliper causing uneven pad wear

Why it matters

This is one of the highest-priority noises. Brakes can be damaged quickly (and become expensive) if grinding continues.

4) Rattle Under the Vehicle (Especially on Start-Up or Acceleration)

What it sounds like: a buzzing/rattling under the floor, sometimes worse when revving.

Most common causes

  • Loose/bent  heat shield (very common after winter)
  • Exhaust hanger issues
  • Exhaust leaks at joints/flanges

Why it matters

Often minor, but exhaust leaks can get louder fast and sometimes let fumes into the cabin.

5) Humming or Growling That Gets Louder With Speed

What it sounds like: a steady hum that increases as you speed up.

Most common causes

  • Wheel bearing wear (common after pothole impacts)
  • Tire cupping from worn shocks/struts
  • Aggressive tire wear patterns

Why it matters

A failing wheel bearing can become unsafe if ignored. It can also cause ABS/traction warnings on some vehicles.

6) Clicking When Turning (Low Speed)

What it sounds like: clicking or popping while turning, often in parking lots.

Most common causes

  • CV axle joint wear (front-wheel drive/AWD)
  • Loose axle nut or worn suspension components

Why it matters

CV issues can worsen quickly and eventually lead to loss of drive or more expensive axle damage.

7) “Thumping” or Vibration After Winter Tire Changeover

What it feels like: vibration in the steering wheel or seat at certain speeds.

Most common causes

  • Tire imbalance
  • Bent wheel from potholes
  • Alignment out of spec
  • Tire pressure mismatch

Why it matters

Vibration isn’t just annoying—it can accelerate wear on tires, wheel bearings, and suspension components.

What You Should Do Next (Quick Steps)

Note when it happens: braking, turning, bumps, or constant with speed.

Check the basics: tire pressure, loose items in trunk, ice/debris in wheel wells.

Don’t delay grinding or loud clunks: those can become expensive fast.

Book an inspection  if the noise is repeatable or getting worse.

How We Diagnose Spring Noises

A proper noise diagnosis typically includes:

  • Roadtest to reproduce the sound
  • Suspension + steering inspection (play checks)
  • Brake inspection (pads/rotors/calipers)
  • Wheel bearing check
  • Exhaust/heat shield inspection
  • Alignment and tire wear review if vibration/pulling exists

Spring Noises FAQ

Is it normal for brakes to make noise after winter?

Light noise can happen due to surface rust, but grinding, loud squeals, or pulling should be checked.

Can potholes really cause clunks?

Yes. Potholes can damage or loosen components like sway links, ball joints, tie rods, and strut mounts.

How do I know if it’s a wheel bearing or a tire noise?

Wheel bearing noise often changes when turning slightly left/right at speed. Tire noise is usually more consistent and tied to tread wear. An inspection confirms it quickly.
