Carbon & Sludge Cleaning Services: Hot Oil Flush and BG Intake Clean — What to Know

November 17, 2013

f your vehicle feels a bit “sluggish,” idles rough, burns oil, or your fuel economy has dropped, the issue isn’t always a failed part. Over time, engines can build up oil sludge/varnish internally and carbon deposits in the intake/valve area—especially on modern direct-injection engines.

At Heritage AutoPro, two of the most effective preventive services we offer are:

  • Hot Oil Flush (engine internal cleaning)
  • BG Intake Clean / Air Induction Cleaning (intake + valve deposit removal)

Here’s what each service does, who it’s best for, and when it’s worth doing.

What Is a Hot Oil Flush?

A hot oil flush is an engine-cleaning service performed right before an oil change. The engine is brought up to operating temperature, a cleaning solution is circulated briefly, and then the old oil (and loosened deposits) is drained out and replaced with fresh oil + a new filter.

What it helps with

A proper internal cleaning service can help reduce sludge/varnish buildup and improve oil circulation. BG’s engine cleaning approach is designed to remove carbon deposits and support engine performance—often used when there are signs of deposit-related issues.

What Is BG Intake Cleaning (Air Induction / Intake & Valve Cleaning)?

BG intake cleaning targets sticky, heavy deposits that build up inside the air intake system and on the backs of valves—an issue that’s especially common on GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines. BG’s intake and valve cleaner is sprayed directly into the intake to remove deposits and help restore performance and efficiency.

Signs You Might Need These Services

Hot Oil Flush may help if you notice:

  • Oil burning or higher oil consumption (no external leak found)
  • Slower response / “tired” engine feel
  • Inconsistent maintenance history or extended oil intervals
  • Dark/thick oil quickly after an oil change
  • Sludge/varnish signs found during inspection

BG Intake Cleaning may help if you notice:

  • Rough idle, hesitation, or stumble on acceleration
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Carbon-related drivability issues (common on GDI)
  • Throttle body/intake deposits found during inspection

What’s Included in Our Services

Hot Oil Flush (Typical Process)

  • Warm engine to operating temp
  • Add an engine cleaning solution and circulate briefly
  • Drain old oil while hot
  • Replace oil filter
  • Refill with fresh oil (correct spec for your vehicle)

BG Intake Clean (Typical Process)

  • Inspect intake/throttle body area
  • Apply BG intake/valve cleaning solution through the intake
  • Help remove deposits that affect airflow and valve operation (especially GDI/PFI deposit areas)

(Exact steps can vary by engine design and condition.)

Important Note: When an Engine Flush Is NOT a Good Idea

We’re careful about recommending flushes blindly. Some experts warn that in engines with severe sludge, aggressive cleaning can loosen material that was “sealing” worn areas and may lead to new leaks or other issues—so it should be assessed first, not automatically sold.

That’s why we base the recommendation on:

  • maintenance history
  • oil condition
  • leak inspection
  • engine behavior and symptoms

How Often Should You Do These?

  • Hot oil flush: typically as-needed (great for neglected maintenance history, sludge risk, or specific symptoms—rather than every oil change).
  • BG intake cleaning: commonly beneficial on GDI vehicles at intervals based on driving conditions (short trips, city driving, and heavy idling tend to build deposits faster).

FAQ

Will this fix a mechanical problem?

These services help when symptoms are driven by deposits. If you have a failing sensor, ignition issue, fuel pressure problem, or mechanical wear, diagnosis comes first.

Is intake cleaning the same as a “fuel additive”?

Not exactly. Fuel additives can help, but intake/valve deposits—especially on some GDI engines—often need a direct intake/induction cleaning method.

Can this improve fuel economy?

It can, when deposits are affecting airflow, valve operation, or combustion efficiency. BG specifically positions its intake/valve cleaner as helping restore performance/efficiency and reduce emissions by removing deposits.

Want to Know If Your Vehicle Is a Good Candidate?

If you tell me your year / make / model / mileage and what you’re noticing (rough idle, oil burning, sluggish acceleration, etc.), I’ll recommend:

  • hot oil flush only
  • intake clean only
  • both
  • or “skip these—diagnose first”
