What is an Insurance Inspection and Who Needs One?

An insurance inspection (often called an insurance motor vehicle inspection) is a basic safety check required by insurance providers in Alberta for certain vehicles. Typically, insurance companies request an inspection for vehicles over 10–12 years old or for vehicles being insured with a new company if the car’s history is uncertain. For example, if you have a 15-year-old car and switch insurers, the new company may require you to get an inspection to verify the car is in safe condition. Likewise, if you’ve heavily modified your car, or if a vehicle has been rebuilt or written off in the past, an insurer might demand an inspection before covering it.

In Alberta, the unofficial guideline is 12 model years old – many insurers use that benchmark (some use 10 years) to decide when a car needs a checkup. The goal is to ensure the vehicle isn’t a high risk on the road. Insurance inspections are about roadworthiness: confirming that the brakes work, the lights come on, the tires are good, and so on. It protects both you and the insurer – you get peace of mind that your older car is safe, and the insurance company knows the vehicle won’t be a hazard that could lead to a claim.

So, if your broker or agent says you need an insurance inspection, don’t worry. It’s a fairly routine inspection and much less intensive than an out-of-province inspection. It’s there to catch any major safety issues on aging vehicles. After all, a well-maintained older car can be just as safe as a new one – this process just verifies that. If your car is 12+ years old in Calgary, be prepared for this requirement when starting a new policy or renewing (depending on the insurer’s policies).

What Does an Insurance Inspection Include?

An insurance inspection in Calgary is essentially a 25-point safety inspection covering the essentials of your vehicle. Our licensed technicians will go through the checklist (either a form provided by your insurer or our standard Alberta-approved insurance inspection form) and examine:

  • Braking system: We check your brake pads/shoes, rotors or drums, brake lines and hoses, and the parking brake. The brakes must be in good working order with sufficient friction material remaining. Any signs of severely worn brakes, fluid leaks, or compromised braking ability will need addressing.

  • Steering & Suspension: We inspect the steering components (tie rods, steering rack, etc.) for tightness and the suspension (shocks/struts, springs, ball joints) for any damage or wear. The car should sit level and not have excessive play or clunking in the front end. Loose or worn suspension parts would be noted for repair.

  • Tires and wheels: Each tire’s condition is noted – they must have safe tread depth (at least 3/32″ in Alberta, though 2/32″ is absolute minimum, we look for ~4/32″ or more for insurance) and no visible damage (cracks, bulges). We also check that wheels are not bent or cracked. Uneven tire wear might indicate other issues, but as long as tires are safe it passes (though we’ll inform you if we see alignment issues).

  • Lighting and electrical: All the mandatory lights are tested – headlights (high and low beam), tail lights, brake lights, turn signals, reverse lights, license plate light, and daytime running lights. If any of these are burned out, it’s an easy fix – but they must all function to pass. We also verify the horn works and that dash indicator lights (like airbag, ABS) illuminate properly on startup (and note if any stay on, which they shouldn’t).

  • Glass and mirrors: We quickly assess the windshield for large cracks that could impair vision (since even for insurance, a huge crack can be a safety issue). Side and rear windows should not be excessively tinted (front sides can’t be tinted in AB). Mirrors need to be intact.

  • Seat belts and safety equipment: All seat belts must latch and retract correctly. We’ll check that the belts aren’t frayed or damaged. If your car originally had airbags, we ensure the airbag light indicates they’re functional (airbag light off after startup). Child safety seat latches (if built in) or tethers should be present if applicable.

  • Under the hood: We give a general look at fluid levels (oil, coolant, brake fluid) and any obvious leaks or issues. For insurance, it’s a basic check – for instance, if we see a significant oil leak or a frayed serpentine belt about to snap, we’d mark that down. The battery should be secure and not leaking. Hoses and belts should be in serviceable condition.

Overall, think of it as a basic roadworthiness inspection – if something would make the car unsafe to drive, it needs fixing. There’s no emission test or computer scan involved, just a good visual/mechanical check by a certified mechanic. The inspection is completed on an official form which typically has checkboxes for pass/fail on each item. We’ll fill that out, sign it (only a licensed journeyman technician can sign off), and provide it to you to submit to your insurance company. You’ll also get a copy for your records. If everything checks out, the vehicle is deemed “roadworthy” or “passed.” If not, we’ll explain what failed and what it will take to remedy the issue. Fortunately, most required fixes (like replacing a bulb or wiper, tightening a loose tie rod, etc.) are usually minor – we can often do them on the spot and pass the car. If it’s something larger (like tires below spec or brake job needed), we’ll give you a quote and get it done quickly so you can get your inspection certificate without delay.

Fast, Certified Service – We Make It Easy

At Heritage AutoPro, we understand that when your insurer says you need an inspection, you want it done fast and hassle-free so you can keep your coverage. Our shops in SE and SW Calgary are fully licensed inspection facilities, and our technicians have decades of experience. When you come in for an insurance inspection, here’s what you can expect:

  • Quick Booking: We offer prompt appointments for insurance inspections – often same-day or next-day bookings. The inspection itself usually takes about 1 to 1.5 hours, and you can relax in our waiting area or drop the car off. We know you don’t want to spend all day on this, so we hustle without cutting corners.

  • Certified Inspectors: Your inspection will be handled by a journeyman automotive technician certified in Alberta to perform these inspections. This means they are knowledgeable and by-the-book. They’ll treat your car with care and integrity. Because we’re a full-service auto shop, if they find any issue, they can explain it to you in plain language and even show you the part or problem area.

  • Transparency: If your vehicle passes, great – we’ll get the paperwork sorted and you’re on your way. If it fails for any reason, we will give you a clear report of what item did not meet the standards and why. You are never obligated to do repairs with us, but we’ll provide a free estimate and timeline if you want us to handle it. Often, failures are things like “rear brake pads below spec” or “left rear turn signal inoperative.” These can be fixed quickly. We’ll even prioritize those repairs to get you re-inspected ASAP, often the same day, so you can satisfy your insurance requirements without a lapse.

  • Approved Forms: We use the Alberta Transportation approved Insurance Inspection Report form (sometimes provided by your insurance, or we have generic ones). This form is widely recognized by insurance companies and registry agents. Once you have the signed report stating your vehicle is safe, that’s typically valid for your insurer (usually for 30 days or so). We keep a copy on file too, in case your agent needs us to fax or email it for verification.

  • No Unnecessary Work: One thing our customers appreciate is that we don’t use inspections as a chance to upsell unnecessary services. We focus on what the insurance checklist requires. Of course, if we notice something unrelated (like a dirty air filter or a minor leak) we might mention it as a courtesy, but we won’t fail you for anything that’s not part of the inspection criteria. Our ethos is honesty – we want you to trust us with all your auto needs, not just this inspection.

In short, we strive to make the insurance inspection a smooth, efficient process for Calgary drivers. We know it’s essentially a formality, but an important one. You’ll leave our shop with the confidence that your car is genuinely safe to drive, and with the proper documentation to keep your insurance in force.
